Referring to your letter of May) in extenso
You state that Lord Kimberly is unable at the
present stage of the matter to admit
Leaving to conjecture the correctness of the report in
the China Mail of Oct 21-1880 and requests me to
furnish him with a definite reply to the letter of
the 12th inst.
I beg most respectfully to say that neither directly nor by inference did I at
any stage admit the correctness of its report in question and merely
stated that
any complaint against the Chief Justice should be heard before any
action is called upon to act on the matter.
I respectfully submit for the consideration of the Secretary of State for the Colonies the accompanying Statement of my case, which I have had printed
for the greater convenience of perusal.
I humbly pray that having regard to my
having entered into a seven year Engagement for which I have given up my practice and position at the
bar, Lord Kimberly will be pleased to peruse
and consider my statement before he pronounces
a final decision on my painful case.
